WHAT CAN KIDS LEARN FROM PLAYING IN VITUAL WORLDS?

Interesting article on MindShift by Audrey Watters asking what children can learn from playing in virtual worlds.

It hits some relevant points such as the number of under 13′s who are using Facebook, the commercialisation of some virtual worlds and what children can learn from using virtual worlds.

Having been involved with virtual worlds since 2008, I have accounts in most of the popular virtual worlds concerning with teaching and learning and I am often asked by parents are these virtual worlds safe places for their children. On the whole I would encourage the use of virtual worlds, but its like any online activity children engage in, it needs to be monitored.
