The Irish chapter of SLACTIONS, the research conference on virtual worlds, is now open

The metaverse is emerging, through the increasing use of virtual world technologies that act as platforms for end-users to create, develop, and interact, expanding the realm of human cooperation, interaction, and creativity. The conference focus is scientific research on applications and developments of these metaverse platforms: Habbo Hotel, IMVU, Second Life, OpenSimulator, Open Croquet, Activeworlds, Project Wonderland, and others, including MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft, and virtual worlds based on social networks, such as *-ville and others, providing a forum for the research community to present and discuss innovative approaches, techniques, processes, and research results. GAMES DEVELOPER CONFERENCE 2010

I had the fantastic opportunity to attend the Games Developer Conference in San Francisco. What a week. Most of the events I attended where related to social and online games. There wasn’t a single talk I didn’t learn from. A typical day started with a mammoth breakfast, onto the Moscone Convention Center at 8am and literally attending talks until 5 or 6pm. There was always plenty of networking opportunities after this, either in the Moscone Convention Center or the numerous booze-based locations. Sid Meiers keynote “Everything you know is wrong” was the highlight, as was the Pocket God talk. Continue reading

HERE I AM!

My first (proper) post to irrek.com…I guess I better set the scene.

I’m employed by the Serious Games and Virtual World team at the Intelligent Systems Research Centre, University of Ulster, Derry. My primary role within the team is content creation mainly with STEM subjects, healthcare and training. A large aspect of our work is the integration of other tools, which aim to add value to learning experiences this includes virtual learning environments, tracking facilities and hardware.

This site was set up to allow me to post my ramblings about various *things* which I’m interested in, occasionally work related posts will dominate.
